Question:

How did I suddenly get a mouthful of cavities?

I'm 40, have never had a cavity my ENTIRE life, I'm an oral hygiene fanatic and all of the sudden my dentist tells me I have 3 cavities (one deep and 2 shallow) and a bunch "on the watch". What happened? I went to the dentist 6 months ago, and he didn't say anything. Is there an explanation for this? I'm really worried.

  1. maybe you're eating too much sweets!!

  2. Perhaps a sudden change in diet or oral hygiene habits? It could also be a change in salivary composition or flow e.g. xerostomic (mouth drying) medications such as some antidepressants can cause this. Other than that I'm not really sure.

  3. When you asked your dentist what did HE give you as an explanation?  Cavities can appear in a 6 month time period...easily.

  4. Did you start drinking bottled water, no flouride?  That sometimes causes cavities. I would also get a second opinion in view of the fact that you had no cavities 6 months ago.  Sometimes, dentists "upsell" dental services.  Better yet, ask him why this happened. What's his explanation.  I would be suspicious of this dentist and go see another dentist.  I have had some dentists and doctors pull some tricks on me to make more money.  One sold me a root canal I didn't need. One tried to sell me a bridge I didn't need. Both of these dentists destroyed a good tooth to make more money doing a bigger-billed dental procedure.  I have gone to good dentists for the most part.  But there are a few that aren't so good and honest.
