I am very curious. How did a 16 year old girl get her art work published into a how to draw manga book?

  1. It looks like she went to Scholastic for the publisher. They printed it in paperback format to avoid the higher costs of doing it in hard cover.

You have to look at the publisher--they do books for kids in school, focusing on what would benefit them in classes. This apparently fit what they wanted for art classes, being written in such a way that it reached the age level it was aimed at.  They published it because it fit in with a teaching role, not because Katy was good at Manga.

Can they do it again?  Well usually publishers don't duplicate books they already have on the market, it cuts sales down from the original title they previously put out. If the next book was different in some way, then yes they'd consider it.  Hers came out in 2004, which was at the start of the Manga really hitting the mass market USA.  It being only 2008 right now, the Scholastic Pub. probably would think it's too soon to issue a similar book.
