Sorry, but I posted this earlier and it was so mispelled. I heard that keratokonus is inherited, but is it common from some perticular group of people?

  1. There are several specialists the world over who will argue as to the origin of keratoconus.  Known possible causes are: heredity, history of atopy (allergy), eye rubbing(controversial), post-surgical.  There is no agreed upon ethnic predilection, either.  If you want to know more:  http://www.opt.indiana.edu/lowther/html/...  or http://www.nkcf.org/

  2. Keratoconus occurs in females slightly more than in males. One long-term study indicated a prevalence of 54.5 diagnosed cases of keratoconus per 100,000 population.

Keratoconus results from an inherited corneal abnormality, an injury of the eye (e.g., hard contact lens use for many years), diseases of the eye such as retinitis pigmentosa, or retinopathy of prematurity, or other disorders such as Noonan syndrome, Down's syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and Leber's congenital amaurosis.
