According to "Mao The Untold Story" by Cheng and Halliday, Mao rose to control the Communist Party largely by obtaining the support of Stalin.  He then won the Civil War after Japan left China in large part because many of the Koumintang Generals were actually Communists or were bought off not to effectively oppose him.  It is definitely true that he used brutal methods to force a number of KMT held cities to surrender, cutting off food and causing mass starvation of civilians.

Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communist Party fought for over 20 years against the corrupt and inefficient dictatorship of Jiang Jie-s**+ (Chiang Kai-shek) and the Chinese Nationalist Party, and came to power by winning the support of the peasants, as well as winning militarily against the Nationalist forces.

he eliminated the competition inside his own ranks (revolutionnary tribunals, or assassination) or by setting them up against a superior enemy force. He was supplied with unlimited weapons and "volunteers" by Stalin and he was assisted by soviet agents in US and Britain who managed to cut off supplies to his opponents (Chang kai Chek)

Then he murdered any real and supposed opponents (and ALL their families) - something around 70 milion people
