How did Motel of the Teyve stories die?

I haven't read the original Tevye stories by Sholem Aleichem, and I only saw the film Teyve (1939) by Maurice Schwartz, but of course I know Fiddler on the Roof. Motel, Tzeitel's husband, in Fiddler, is alive and well at the end, but in the film Tevye, Tzeitel is a widow. So, how does Motel die?
