  1. You are right to wonder if costumes used in movies are accurate:most of the time they are not.In Costume History courses I learned that the best places to see what was worn are museums.Check out the Metropolitan Museum of New York and other museums for clothing and paintings of people from the era.

Helen Mirren's movie about Queen Elizabeth I looked to be particularly accurate about clothing.

Here's a link to Elizabethan Clothing, a website dedicated to the subject:

  2. In addition to the detail given above, you might like to see contemporary portraits of the Tudor royal women.  There are some interesting commentaries.

Portraits of Henry VIII, and his six wives:

    Mary I:

Elizabeth I (there is a lovely portrait here of her as a young princess:

  3. Check out costuming websites, Renaissance fair clothing, or, you could just look up some paintings.  Find a painting of Henry VIII.  That's what they wore.

  4. a shift - like a nightshirt - made of linen, but very fine.

    a corset.

    petticoat/s tied at the waist

    stockings gartered at the knee

    buckled or padded shoes

    a boned hoop skirt

a separate top, like a blouse, with attachable sleeves.

    a separate underskirt

    an overskirt

    a jacket or coat

a net to hold the plaited hair

    a hat or bonnet

a veil, for widows or older women

....and you think you have problems getting dressed for work!
