Heaps of theories on the "net: but I understand it referred to the Great Plague.  Ring of roses referring to the first visible symptoms on the skin of a type of rash.  Carrying flowers in your pocket (posies) was meant to be a deterrent to the disease.  Another symptom was sneezing (ah tishoo) then you died (we all fall down)
