  1. Exactly, this first set is breath taking. It is upset to not know why Roger play so bad later. why? why?

  2. Federer completely dominated Simon in the first set, it looked quite scary actually at how breath-takingly awesome Federer began the match. The reason he lost was because Federer's serve collapsed at the end of the second set. For whatever reason Federer could not get his first serves in anymore. Call it a slump, call it a mental block, call it out of gas, whatever -- well his serve completely failing him combined with some terrible line calls that rattled him was enough to end it.

Those last two sets was the worst serving performance I've ever seen from Roger Federer. Wimbledon hangover I suppose. Roger can act cheery on camera and stuff but losing Wimbledon really broke his heart and shattered him deep down. It'll take more than a couple weeks for him to recover from the Wimbledon loss for sure. You can tell just by how he acted and moved that Federer was panicking in that second set when he didn't convert some break points that would have put Simon away. Roger feels the pressure very hard now and it's something new for him -- adversity is a new territory that he has to learn to deal with. He knows he needs to win something big -- and fast. But he has to just go slow, and take it one match at a time. The problem is that he's looking and praying so hard to win an olympic gold medal and US open title right now when he should be looking and focusing on his first round opponent of Cincinnati.

  3. He played better than him in the end. The first set Roger dominated winning it 6-2. I personally believe maybe Federer underestimated his opponent they had never played before and once Fed cruised through the first set he was thinking he had it in the bag. But Gilles stepped it up and caught roger offguard, Federer started to panick all of a sudden he actually had a match on his hands some competition.... and then Boom ! Before y`know it Simon has won the match :) !!!

  4. Simon didn't beat him.  Federer hand it over to Simon with 51 unforce errors.  He still overcome what happened in Wimbledon.  He needs time to recover.

  5. every other player is seeing there small window of opurtunity to take advantage of federers decline.....

federer is also missing confidence inside right now, but also still has a very big expectation of himself to win matches over much lower ranked players....

federers dominace days are over, he has to take every opponent seriously, he cannot just waltz on court without his A game anymore and expect to win..

he will also have to put aside the excuses for his loss, ailing health, atmosphere, etc...

  6. Roger Federer once stated in an interview that against anyone other than Nadal he does not walk on court with a game plan, he just figures it out during play.

I think this kind of thinking is catching up to him. He's never played Simon before and it was clear from the post match interview that he was not familiar with Simon's game.

After dominating the first set I think he expected Simon to be broken and give up like so many others in the past. But Simon held his ground, stuck to the game plan, attacked the Federer backhand and forced him to play as many balls as possible. I think what caused Federer to fall apart was the fact that Simon didn't give up as he expected.

If Federer is to regain his form he must first admit to himself  that his game is not what it once was. No more mono excuses (or suggesting it), no more poor lighting excuse, no more walking on court without a game plan, no more underestimating his opponents. He has to work harder than he did when he was dominating. Because the other guys-not only have they improved, but they are not intimidated by him as they used to be. The Federer aura of invincibility has been broken and everyone is looking to get a piece of him.

  7. Well we can look at this match in 2 ways. Simon "beat" Federer, by playing his own game towards end of first set, as well as staying in the long ralleys with Roger and winning those key points. Roger beat himself with his forehand which took a day off, as well as his impatience in long ralleys. In those long ralleys he showed impatience, went for too much, and sprayed the ball wide, continuously. Credit to Giles though for sticking it through.
