A white one at that! If it was black at least it would be an Australian bird. It is as silly as Brisbane having Lions at their nick. A lion is not an Australian animal.

  1. Yes. It was after that ballet composition of the dying swan. The seam were seen to be in that similar position so often the name stuck.

  2. The team got the nickname of "Swans" back when it was still based in South Melbourne. This came about due to the fact that swans were commonly seen swimming in Albert Lake, which is where the old South Melbourne home ground was. The name stuck when they moved to Sydney, with the clud hierarchy deciding the Opera House design could be used to resemble the tailfeathers of a swan.

Prior to the name "Swans" they were famously known as the "Bloods", short for "blood stained angel", due to the red strip on their white top as well as their very physical approach to play.

  3. Yeah, Rabbitoh's sound real tough.

  4. There certainly are some good ones around - before being the Bulldogs, Canterbury were the "Berries". Even though Geelong are the AFL champions, it seems very strange to have a team of "cats".

Even here in the ACT, the team in the Super 14 is the Brumbies -sorry, I have lived in Canberra for 27 years and I have never seen a wild horse.

So I think the animal (or vegetable) associated with a team means very little these days.

  5. They inherited from South Melbourne.

They had it when they came up here otherwise they would have selected some fierce sounding name to fit in with the other football codes in Sydney.

  6. i dont think it really matters

  7. well i think the Sydney one is cause the Sydney Oprah house is sort of in a swan shape if u look at it good enough.

  8. Did they select that name after the ballet, The Dying Swan?

He he he he......That was so funnee, agreed?
