  2. Its not separated as such, its just that its the only bit of the continent sticking up above sea level at that point.

    Its the tip of a mountain, in the same way that Hong Kong Island is.

  3. The builders of the Panama Canal came to Australia and separated Tasmania from the rest of the country. Unfortunately, they learnt to build boats and some of them have escaped to the mainland.

  4. The bit in between is below sea level.  Same deal applies with Africa.

    They were connected.  At the end of the last ice age the icecaps melted.  The water level rose.  Tasmania became separated (as did New Guinea)
