How did Tropic Thunder beat The Dark Knight?

Was it really that good. Because I have friends who went and saw it and said it was terrible.

Because Dark Knight been out for like 6 weeks, everyone n their mama saw it at least once by then, so of course when Tropic THunder came out, people who were scared poopless by the Joker figured it's time to get a laugh.

Something was bound to beat it eventually. It trended -%50 every week just like a normal movie. The only reason it was number one for so long was it's high first week and that other films performed below expectations.  It's definitely a better movie than Thunder it just couldn't keep making 30 million every week.
