How did USA (media) do the ranking in the previous Olympics?

  1. It doesn't matter how they did it. In the past 4 Olympics (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004), US got both the most gold medals and the most number of medals overall.


  2. I may be somewhat young but as far as I can remember it's always been by the overall medal count. I think many people haven't realized that's how we do things and think they're some sort of biased. People see what they want to see.

  5. It's usually done by number of golds.

    Infact the link from Jim, supports this fact.

    For the people that aren't looking beyond 1-2 and 3, note that Japan is ranked over Germany by virtue of having more golds.
