  1. They didn't. Australia became independent in 1901, WWI started in 1918.

  2. all i know about austrailia is that it was a penal colony(prison colony) for the british but after a while austrailia became to costly to mantain and they left thinking the prisoners would die but they didnt and i think they were independent pre the worldwars

  3. Australia's time as a British colony ended prior to the World Wars, but greater degrees of independence occurred after WWI and continued well after WWII.

In 1901, the six Australian colonies became states federated into the Commonwealth of Australia with its own constitution.  Australia continued to give formal allegiance to the British Crown--symbolic executive power is vested in Queen Elizabeth II, who is represented throughout Australia by the governor-general.  The governor-general was initially appointed by the British monarch on advice by British ministers, but has been appointed on recommendation by the Australian government since 1931.  The Statute of Westminster of that year recognized Australia as independent and gave it the right to amend previous laws enacted for it by Britain.  Another post WWI change:  since 1927 the British monarch has not been king/queen IN Australia, but king/queen OF Australia.  This meant that Australia was no longer part of the United Kingdom, but headed as a separate kingdom by the king/queen.

The Australia Act of 1986 definitively ended the right of the British parliament to make laws for Australia under any circumstances, as well as terminating the remaining judicial links to Britain.  Queen Elizabeth can only exercise power when physically present in Australia, although the office of governor-general remains.  The elected prime minister, currently Kevin Rudd, is effectively the executive power.
