  1. Protection against invaders such as the Assyrians from Asia.

    In the long term (such as modern times) the deserts are not a benefit since it reduced arable land to the strip that the Nile River runs through.


  2. Yes, the deserts were a better defence than the sea.  But while the deserts kept the invaders out, they also kept the natives in - thereby concentrating the populations that were necessary to creating Egypt's great civilization.
