Kemal Attaturk wanted to bring the Turkish nation into the twentieth century, and to make it a strong modern state.  He succeeded.

Mohandas Ghandi wanted a couple of hundred million Indians to live like peasants and try and earn a living sitting at home with spinning wheels and drinking urine for their health.

He did not succeed.
