  1. This is sleight-of-hand really. He did not hurt anyone with such so-called "punches". You could do the same thing yourself, if someone taught you how. If one bends his arm, a "1" punch has a long follow through, but as several people noted, it is a push, not a punch. Few people can generate much power for real punches in short distances. Once, my 6'-4", 240 lbs. pal Bill Jones (That is his real name!) brought in some pieces of concrete. He has a black belt in Isshun Ryu Okinawan karate. He challenged me to a breaking contest. He stacked 6 of them and split the top 3 in half with a shute uke (karate chop) with his hand moving about a yard. I stacked 6 and placed my fingertips against the top one. Then, by simply closing my fist, I shattered all 6 into small pieces. My 3" seiken uke (karate punch) was much more devastating than Bill's chop that travelled 12 times as far. I guarantee that if I gave anyone such a 3" punch, he would  be KO'd or have bones smashed, rather han just be pushed and smiling about it. Of course, I weigh 370 lbs. lately at 6'-1", while some of Bruce's relatives told me Bruce was 5'-6", 135 lbs. in top form. Bill and I have chi power too, and we are much bigger than Bruce.

  2. Find video of it.

See how far. Use his height to get an idea.

You'll see that it's not that far.

  3. because its not a punch , its a push made for show. Have you ever watched Boxing , or MMA , where they land body shots? Have you noticed when they throw body punches in boxing or mma, the other fighter does not go flying 10 feet , they just cripple and fall where they stand, because it hits their inner organs causing internal bleeding or broken ribs, which hurts allot more than being pushed by a fist.

  4. I cant remember the exact name of the technique. but Bruce Lee had amazing power. he developed control techniques that allowed power through the flow of the movements. He actually gained massive strength with a short quick movement. It was amazing. Put together  the power of mind , control of the movements and extreme strength, it worked quite well.

  5. because it is a push. think about it. a kick from a horse doesn't throw people that far. and if the horses kick lands in a vital area the person kicked dies or is hospitalized. these people got up and walked away.

  6. He harnessed the power of his chi and focused it in his punch.

  7. This has always interested me, so I'm certain I'll explain it inadequately.

When you punch someone, where do you aim? Well, aiming at a point and through a point are different things. So first, a one inch punch isn't going to stop at one inch. It's going to go through a target.

You've got one inch in which to generate momentum for the punch, so the whole body will be a part of it. Setting the feet, turning the hips and letting the arm fly forward. This is, of course, grossly simplified, but you get the point as to where the power would come from.

Even with a normal, full range punch, the difference between it being a strike and a push is minimal. Sense the tendency would be for the punch at one inch to be carried further, the energy would be carried past the opponent and he would move.

As for why they move so far... Well... Something to think about: Have a friend that you know you can lift stand in front of you. Have them think "Up up up up up" as you try to lift them. Now try it again, and have them think, "Down down down down down". Nice little ideomotor response related to Helstromism.
