  1. Catherine of Aragon died before Anne was beheaded.

Catherine had been ill; on 7 January 1536 she awoke with stomach pains and nausea. She quickly became very weak and her confessor was summoned. She dictated two letters, one to Henry and one to Charles. She received Holy Communion and extreme unction then prayed aloud for two hours.  Catherine died at 2 pm at Kimbolton Castle, Huntingdonshire, probably of cancer of the heart.  She was just fifty years old.

The next day an autopsy was carried out on Catherine's body. A black growth was found on her heart but no other abnormalities. They pronounced the growth to be caused by poisoning. It was widely believed that Anne Boleyn had slowly poisoned Catherine to death and the death of Mary was expected to follow. The news that Catherine had been poisoned spread throughout Europe.

Catherine was given a state funeral as widow of the Prince of Wales. Henry and Anne Boleyn did not attend the funeral. Catherine was buried in Peterborough Abbey.

Anne Boleyn miscarried a male foetus on the day of Catherine's funeral, 29 January 1536.  "According to most observers, this personal loss was the beginning of the end of the royal marriage."

Anne was executed on 19 May 1536.

  2. Rumours circulated that she had been slowly poisoned by Anne or Henry. The rumours were born after the apparent discovery during her embalming that there was a black growth on her heart that might have been caused by poisoning. Modern medical experts are in agreement that her heart's discolouration was due not to poisoning, but to cancer, something which was not understood at the time.

  3. She died of natural causes.

  4. She died at Kimbolton Castle , on 7 January 1536.

Anne Boleyn was beheaded on 19th May 1536, 4 months later.
