  1. They didn't.

  2. Europeans DID take slaves from the coastal areas, and relied on enemy tribes to bring others from the interior.  They brought their ships, loaded them up and sailed to the New World (actually a fairly low percentage ended up in what is now the US).  It was the equivalent of the huge drug trade today.

  3. They bought them from African and Arab slave traders in West Africa.

  4. The trade was triangular; European goods were traded with African tribes who would sell slaves they had captured in raids or war; these could be sold anywhere in the New World from which raw materials (cotton, sugar, tobacco etc) were brought to Europe.

The slaves came from diverse sources but very few were captured by European "hunters" - who hardly would have been suited to fight in Africa. African chiefs/kings did that side of things, using European arms to further their own nations. Africa traditionally had a slave trade (to the N.E.) but European demand was on a new scale and caused some damage to the African societies it came in contact with.

  5. Eurpeans didn't take slaves, they were captured by other africans and brought to Europe to be sold. Europeans bought the slaves because they were a form of cheap labor and status at the time....
