How did evangelists take hold of this country? What can be done?

I am starting to really hate this country because I feel like our government has become just a tool for radical religious groups to create their ideal society. Since many of these christian and other religious groups are not made up of free-thinking people...but rather hordes of brainwashed, bible thumpers... the christian leaders blackmail the politicians and manipulate their congregations of tens of thousands to vote for whoever will give them the most power. It totally eliminates the possibility for any candidate with logical sense to gain control because they have to bend over backwards for these religious nuts. It also totally dismisses any possibility of non-christian based reform that a libertarian, or agnostic/athiest might have. I find it disturbing that a non-christian can't be voted into office. This isn't a democracy... its a puppet show for the churches to play with.

PS..I know there are free-thinking christians in the world... but those aren't the ones i'm worried about

Make all churches accepting donations publish their political beliefs, and have them registered as political parties.

It was a deal they worked out with the Republican Party in the early 1980s. If they could join forces with that party to gain political power, then in return, they would mobilize their followers to vote for Republican candidates. This started when Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980. Before that, the party was much more moderate. Its 1976 party platform supported abortion rights but only marginally. In fact, Vice President George H. W. Bush was pro-choice until 1980.
