Well, all the senses are nothing but patterns of electrical stimuli to our brain, which then recognizes one particular pattern, and gives it a name like "lemon" or "strawberry", from prior experience.

This is the theory behind "brain-in-a-jar" concepts, like in the movie Matrix.  By providing the right pattern of stimuli to the brain, people can be made to believe that they are tasting steak, or smelling roses.

How's that for a useless piece of information to help you pass your boring day?
