I once heard that it dated back to medeval times, or long ago at any rate, when rival armies, British and French, used the bow and arrow. The French apparently stooped to cutting off the bow finger, or middle finger, of any rivals they captured, or at least had threatened to. So it was considered a great insult for the British to show off their middle finger to the French and exclaim "Pluck Yew!, I can still Pluck Yew!!"

It started in the late 50's , early sixties

You would stick your thumb up and say "sit on it, rotate, and fall off"

It evolved into the one finger salute.

Its possibly thousands of years old. Its called the digitus impudicus (latin for "impudent finger") in Ancient Roman writings and a reference is made to using the finger in the Ancient Greek comedy "The Clouds," written by Aristophanes.
