  1. Yes ! peternal, he surmised, and you've all been surmising ever since that he was correct.

  2. Geologic time was the key to evolution.  It's explains how species evolve and why evolution is unobservable directly.

  3. Simply, geology provided proof of the fact that the earth was unimaginably old, which in turn allowed for the time needed for animals to evolve through 'natural selection'.

  4. Darwin was about Evolution, and I suppose that he could see how "things" evolved to adapt to new surroundings.

  5. You have to realize that geology was not very sophisticated in those days.  They were just beginning to understand basic geology and most still believed that god made the world and the world was relatively young.  I would think that geology influenced his ideas because he saw different species take up similar niches in different continents as well as islands and he saw how some like finches changed to adapt to various niches.  Perhaps he was smart enough to realize that the earth was older than many previously believed and older fossils would be found deeper as well.

  6. He surmised that fossilized specimens could be found buried in the earth, and the further down one digs, the further back in time one goes...

    He was basically correct!
