How did global poverty begin, outside of the obvious Christian "straight out of the bible" reasons?

overfarming depleted the land, war caused land to be mined, cause food to sit unused in warehouses because it was too dangerous to deliver it.

the rich would have to donate some of thier money to help out.

Poverty is relative, you know.  Those in poverty today would be considered pretty well off by the 12th century standards.
