Handball spread in Europe as this is where the origins of the sport begun. There where distant related  versions of this sport played going back to Ancient Greece and Rome "Harspaten". Versions of Handball survived during the Middle Ages in Germany "Fangsballspiel" meaning catch ball game  and throughout region. Also during the Middle Ages  Knights played a game similar to Handball as well as a way to stay in shape.

Modern Game of Handball can trace it start at the turn of the 19th century based  on field handball games called "Raffle Ball" and "Konigsbergerball" and another version of games was played in Danish town of Nyborg. Germany, Denmark and Sweden starting in 1910 when G Wallstrom introduced the game where the countries that spread the game.

It was German physical education instructors such as Karl Schelenz 1919 ,regarded as the father of modern Handball,  that created rules for the game with his 11 a side field version (outdoors) and would be used as the bases for the modern indoor game.

International Amateur  Handball Federation was created in 1928 and it was Field Handball version played at Berlin 1936 Olympics as well as first World Championships 1938. As mentioned above field version was 11 on 11 played on a full size Football (SOCCER) field.

1946 an indoor version of Handball would become popular 7 on 7 game played today would be more popular in the Scandinavian countries (good exercise in the winter as they have shorter Soccer season). It was also in 1946 that International Handball Federation was created oversaw 2 separate versions of the sport at the world championships.

1964 this would come to an end as Field version was discontinued as it fell out of favor as the indoor version became more popular.Since it was faster and higher scoring. Scores of over 30 a team are not uncommon in Handball (team).

1972 with Munich Germany as the host city Handball would come back as an Olympic sport as the indoor version and would remain.

Handball is most popular in Germany, Scandinavian countries and throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Unknown in United Kingdom, Ireland and not played much in Italy among others. Top 3 pro leagues are in Germany, Spain and France where best players are paid a couple $100,000's.  So it helps that sport is on TV over in Europe and kids at young age have been exposed to the sport.  

In Europe where it's popular  you have a chance to play the sport at the pro level and represent your country in Olympics and World Champions that creates an incentive for the sport to flourish. Sponsors and endorsements also put money into the sport. 2007 World Championships in Germany over 19,000 fans attended the final match against Poland and millions more watched it on TV. SO YOU CAN SAY THE SPORT HAS BECOME PART OF THE SPORTING LANDSCAPE CULTURE.

Also women play in pro leagues as well and have been apart of the Olympics since 1976.

Asia- South Korea is really only country that has a strong national team that started in 1998 Seoul  when they created a strong program to make a god showing. Men finished in 2nd place silver and Women won the tournament with a gold. In fact South Korean Women have a strong team as they came in 2nd inn 2004. China sport is not very big where given automatic places as the host country not sure if game will make impact once the Olympics are over. In rest of Asia such as Japan (not really that big) and Gulf Arab nations has to do with fact federations put money into sport since it's an Olympic sport. You also have republics in central Asia such as Kazakhstan  that where at one time part of Soviet Union where Russians introduced  the sport.

Side not game of Handball outside of Europe is popular in North Africa.  Brazil is lately the team that does the best in the America's  qualifications. In North America Greenland is where it's most popular.
