  1. Spanish Mustangs found throughout the plains and in the west descended from Spanish horses lost by the Conquistadors and Explorers in the 16th century.

Cortez, Balboa, Coronado, Pizarro and De Soto all brought horses to the New World and lost some.  These horses carry the blood of Spanish Barbs, Arabians, Lipizzaner and some other European breeds.

They were domesticated and traded by the various Native American Tribes from Florida to the Pacific West, and there are still herds of these same horses still roaming Nevada, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming.

Later other breeds were brought by settlers from all over Europe and Asia, but they were mostly special breeds such as draft horses and later race horses.

  2. Are you asking about horses in general or specifically racehorses - thoroughbreds?

If just general horses then the answer is the Spanish and English colonists.

If you are referring to Thoroughbreds then they would have been specifically imported from Europe (most likely Ireland and Britain) for the purpose of racing.  Thoroughbred racing did not start in the USA until the mid 1800s, so Thoroughbreds would have started to be imported at about this time.

  3. The Europeans brought them. Have you ever heard of Moctezuma of Montezuma? Well, the Spanish brought horses over to Mexico (and a breed of dog). Montezuma had supposedly heard from or had a dream from another god saying that soon a white god would come and take over everything. Well, what was he supposed to think when the spanish came? The must be gods!!! And so of course they were nice to them and were very hospitable... at least for a while. But the point is, the brought horses and since the Aztecs had never seen them  they thought the man and the horse were one being. That's how horses were brought to America, as for how they got to the u.s, you can probably figure out on your own! Sorry if this is too lengthy!

  4. The Spanish conquistadors brought them from Spain.  The indians in south america never saw horses before, and when they saw the oddly-dressed Spaniards riding the big horses, they thought they were gods.

In other words, they were imported from Europe on a boat.

They were brought to what is now the United states the same way... on a boat.

  6. Don't know, ask the irish
