  1. Paternal is right.  They migrated across the land bridges formed when sea levels were much lower.  In addition, I believe that many people underestimate ancient people that probably figured out how to make boats.  There are only a couple places that are about 50 miles wide where land passage was not possible.  In these areas, clearly they needed some sort of boat or raft.  H. Erectus was probably in Indonesia for over a million years.  I am not very confident that this creature was our ancestor.  It might have simply been closely related.

  2. In addition to the other fine answers, knowledge of lands over the horizon can be determined by smoke from forest fires, clouds gathering over land, and bird migration.

Those using rafts to catch fish would easily be caught in currents or storms, then blown to an unknown land. Once there, they would find their way back and return to colonize.

Australia has always been at least 60 miles from the next nearest landmass, however there's evidence that humans reached it 30,000 years ago. This requires some impressive sea travel.

  3. The old theory was they migrated there by land and sea. Now, that thought is turning to a development of a human specie there...specific to Indonesia.

    Good Morning!

  4. During previous Ice Ages, when ocean water levels were down as much as 450' (150m) lower, most of the land from Africa to Indonesia was connected, which did not necessitate simple rafting, which may have been done by humans, to get to Australia...

  5. Google Sundaland!

  6. By walking there. maybe with some boat travel to island hop

  7. The same way the dog food can got to Italy??
