  1. I do not know how you got on Yahoo Canada, though I can speculate that, during a web search, you clicked on a link that took you there (i.e., not everyone is from the USA, ya know!).

If you are using a USA-based internet service provider, then you should get Yahoo USA automatically, just by typing "http://www.yahoo.com" into the address bar of your web browser (many browsers and servers no longer require the "http://" or "www." part). On exceedingly rare occasions, users might be sent to a nearby nation's version of Yahoo (i.e., the Yahoo USA server is overwhelmed or down, etc). Since the search content and results are pretty much the same between nearby nations, it shouldn't be that much of an issue; regardless, you can always search for what you want regardless of what nation's version of Yahoo appears (unless, of course, that nation has specified to Yahoo that certain content not be shown, or, conversely, be shown).

However, to guarantee to get onto Yahoo USA:  you only need to type http://us.yahoo.com (again, some browsers/servers don't require the "http://" part).

  2. Because on May 1st, yahoo began checking your IP address. If you had a Canadian IP address, you were sent to yahoo.ca  even if you typed www.yahoo.com

This was presumably done to increase traffic on yahoo.ca so they could charge more for advertising on the Canadian site. About May 15th they began showing a prompt after you were sent to yahoo.ca asking if you really wanted to go to to yahoo.com and gave you a box  where you could select yahoo.com.

I noticed today (May 25) that for the first time since May 1st I was able to get directly to yahoo.com as I had always been able to do prior to the change. Yahoo knows what they'll try next.

This is a subtle reminder of how websites can always tell where you're located (unless you use a proxy ISP like anonymizer) and force you to accept whatever they've decided is good for you (or more precisely, what might make them a few pennies more in profit). Another word for this is censorship.

(It made me realize for the first time that when I visit ANY web site, I could be seeing a different version from what is being presented to someone else and neither of us would ever know the difference.)

  3. Many people are also saying they are getting the wrong country. You can guarantee that you get the US site by going to http://us.yahoo.com .
