So this is the problem.

(-2)^3+1

i know the answer is -7, but i don't know how to get that.

Do i add the 3+1 then do the exponent? or do i apply each to the base? Help me figure out how this is solved.

  1. you have -2³ + 1

You do not add 3 + 1. The operations order rules say that you first compute the power of (-2³), then you add 1. Exponential operation has a greater priority than the sum.

    So first you do -2³ = -(2³) = - (2 x 2 x 2) = -8,

    then you add 1: -8 + 1 = -7

  2. (-2)^3 + 1

    = (-2)(-2)(-2) + 1

    = (4)(-2) + 1

    = -8 + 1

    = -7

  3. -2^3+1 try adding brackets

    (-2^3)+1   =-8+1=-7

  4. you can do this like

    (-2)^3 + 1

    = (-2)*(-2)*(-2)   +   1

    = -8+1

    = -7

  5. (-2)^3+1

    =(-2)(-2)(-2)+1

    =(4)(-2)+1

    = -8+1

    = -7
