  1. Actually all 'irons' have always had iron heads. the 'drivers' or 'woods' had wooden heads up till around the 70's. That's why people still call drivers 'woods' (ie. 3 wood, 5 wood, etc.) Now the SHAFTS were made out of wood for a long time, but not in recent history have the irons head's been made out of wood that i've seen. if you could find a iron with a wooden head, buy it and sell it on ebay.


  2. Originally clubs were made completely out of wood. Hand carved. This made the clubs very expensive and the game was only for the upper class that could afford to purchase the clubs. As technology advanced, different materials were used, making the clubs more affordable and more durable.

    Eventually, metal was used in making the club head. A material that could be mass produced. Hence the name iron.
