How did men prepare to battle against the vikings, in a Viking Raid ?

In open land the best defense, was a shield wall, where all the shields are interlocked all together, all side by side, normally flanked by thick tress, or other in-passable objects, like  hedges to be able not to be flanked by the enemy,  and possible anything up-to about 8 rows deep, (the deeper the better)...
