How did mice get into my house?

We live in a new home - moved in last September - and have never seen any signs of mice. Sure we've had spiders in the basement, but never mice.

Today I went into the basement to look for something (it is unfinished, but full of our empty boxes and stuff we just don't have anywhere to go & Christmas decorations etc.) and I see a dead mouse. I think it starved to death, then about a foot 1/2 away, there is another dead mouse. My husband was down there last night and did not see either of them.

Then when I went into my closet (mine since I have all of my shoes, coats, purses etc in there) to get my work gloves to go get the mice to flush them, I see tons more mouse scat. In some of my shoes even.

How did mice get into our house? What do I do?? I can't reach my husband so I am freaked out. I have never dealt with mice in a house before - sure in a barn or whatever, but it's freaking me out!!

What do I do???

  1. Mice need a hole the size of a quarter to get into your house so any little hole is a possibility. What you do is go to your local supermarket (ex:Longs Drugs) and get some sticky mouse traps. Just put them scattered around your basement (typically in the darkest places or in the four corners of your basement). The scent of the nuts (that is typically the food that is supplied on the traps. If there is no food on the sticky traps, any cheese will do) will attract them to the trap and when they step on the trap, they are stuck.

I know that it is kind of sad (really sad) to see an innocent mouse lying on its death table but if you are that freaked out, you should consider doing that.

Whatever you do, don't try to save the mice once you have them trapped because they will just keep coming back. There isn't any way to stop them other than disposing of them.

If you don't have a store that sells them by you, try amazon.com, ebay.com, or even longsdrugs.com. Check the traps everyday and when you catch one, dispose of it and replace it with a new one.

    Good luck!

  2. Mouse Traps

    Mouse Poisons

    CATS

Mice will find a way in if they want in.   You can have a hole somewhere about the size of a nickle and they will get in.

  3. HUMANE TRAPS!!! no killing traps, but i'll give you some better tarp ideas to get them out and set them free. They probably got in by a hole.

    those will be harmless traps

  4. a mouse can go through a hole no wider than 1inch

unless u can block off every tiny hole, u're stuck with them.

however, there is a method that my fren told me about that should work.

mice hate peppermint smell so get a bottle of peppermint-scented  aroma therapy fluid and moisten some cotton balls with it and then put it where u see droppings.'

you can also use mouse traps but 1. they are centered in one location while scents can travel distances and 2. u have to dispose of the body
