How did old scientists know about the features of moon's surface?

Well it is an amazing story....

you see there once was a famous scientist who was eating swiss cheese and crackers in the middle of the night. He looked up into the sky and noticed that the moon looked a lot like his cheese piece. So when he compared the two he realized that the moon must have holes and bumps like cheese. The End.
