    THEN the internet.

    Then cell phones.

    Then texting.

  4. There have always been means of communication that don't involve precise spoken words; we use plenty of nonverbal communication even today. Facial expressions, gestures, sounds and objects can all be used to communicate without using spoken word.

    Babies manage to communicate basic needs just fine without using words. Animals never developed spoken language; but they can communicate with each other without speech too.

  6. There's never not been a spoken language.

    People have found places that were drawn on that tell stories, but that's about writing.

  7. Even chimpansees communicate with sounds.  They also use body language and actions even more...much of your in person socializing is thru body language, which you may not even realize until it is pointed out to you.
