How did people in the past treat UTI?

Nowdays there are a number of anti biotics and medicines to treat Urinary Tract Infections but I was wondering how did people in the past cure them when there were no anti biotics? Or did the UTI develop into a serious kidney infection and then killed them?

Drink a lot of fluids, especially cranberry juice to help "flush-out" the kidneys.
