  1. They used primitive tools like compasses, compared sundial readings from different locations and used astronomical instruments.

    The first maps were often T maps and O maps that were more of a description than a map. Most maps, well into the 18th century, relied on cartographers to visualize and draw a completed map.  They usually were not to scale.
