  1. a thing called FM radio band.  if it was NOT for FM, then radio would not be popular. AM radio is HOT, 'cause of Rush Limbaugh. either way, if I had the money. I'd have a pair of radio stations, ditch the SPORTS TALK format.

  2. music

  3. Radio has not really changed over the years. Terrestrail Radio meaning fm or am broadcasting can survive because of its local content which alot people like still. Satillite Radio xm or sirius is doing well becuase of its commercail free programing if hate to listen dj's and commercails then satillite is the way to go.

Fm and am have adapted over the years. Most recent things they have done is DAB digital audio broadcasting which if you have the recevier you can song and artist info live traffic updates and news. this technology has done well europe however not huge hear in North america. The current project now hd radio. broadcasters can use the same frequency to broadcast multiple channels of content on them. This growing in america and has been recently been approved in canada. this will satillite radio a run for money in content war. Oh i also forgot internet radio. This also becomeing popular becuse of wifi technology. Think about it any station u want in the world on cell phone or your ipod and mp3 player.

tv has its own problems. they actually in way like radio. media now is albout convergence. For example the cbc. they can use both streams of media to get the same message across to ppl in cars or at home. tv major competertor in the pvr or tivo. ppl now are skipping through commercails in which then they do not have enough money to continue broadcasting.

Radio has the threat of ipod and mp3 player.

  4. I think they have moved to "entertainment" more - comedy programs, talk shows, etc. - to catch those folk who just listen for a short time. For news, there is nothing more immediate than properly presented radio: they can get there and report faster than television, if done properly.

  5. Went from storytelling concepts (soap operas, The Shadow, Amos & Andy, etc.) to mostly music.  There are still some talk radio shows and other formats on NPR, but it's mostly music now on the other channels.

  6. FM.

    Pretty much what Duh said.

  7. There's some interesting comments, but no real answer to your question.

OK, here's the real answer short and sweet.

Radio had been a 1/4 hour based medium of long newscasts, comedies, dramas and variety shows. TV came along and did the same thing, but with motion, visibility and eventually color.

After floundering for several years, radio made the move to music-based programming in several formats. Along with much shorter newscasts and a lot of local promotion, personality and contesting, radio redefined itself and again became a major media player. The coming of age of FM further contributed to this evolution by adding much better fidelity as the Rock 'n' Roll age matured.

Now of course we face an entire new set of challenges which have been explored in other questions on this board.
