How did they evolve to be complex; what were the intermediate stages and why did they change? Any helpful websites would be very much appreciated!

  1. Sexual reproduction is one of those things that evolved a few times.  Plants, Fungi, and Animals all reproduce sexually, though there are some of each kingdom that reproduce asexually.

  2. evolution is the natural progression of a species to adapt to become more able to cope with the environment

most evolutionary steps come as a result of mutation of genes that give rise to a trait or characteristic that may have a benifit to the animal/plant that dispays this characteristic

it is known across scientist that we evolved from aquatic creatures and slowly but surely became land dependant, just as fish and frogs do today eggs and sperm were released into the water and fertilisation took place outside the body as the water did the job, as a mutation started our progression to land it was more benifitial for us to have young on land and so very slowly we developed ways of doing this, some frogs carry frog spawn on their backs and so our predecessors would have done the same or similar as thi meant that they could develop away from water, most male frogs don't have a p***s they just have a meatus (hole) for urination and ejaculation and ejaculate on the back of a female who lays eggs on to a fla of skin where the frog spawn develops, mutations meant that gradually internal development was needed to provide better protection to the young and as the developement occured further inside a method was needed to get the sperm to the right place for fertilisation so mutations slowly developed the p***s

bear in mind that most mutations were gradual and evolution of the female and male mammal sexual organs took millions of years

all plants and animals on the earth share a degree of DNA which shows that we all started from the same thing which scientist are saying was particles from space when the earth wa in its infancy these particles were nothing more than amino acids (the building clocks of protein which is the building blocks of DNA) as the earth was violent and molten at first these particles would have been changed chemically into DNA and eventually bacteria similar to waht we know of today then slowly and gradually evolving into multi celled organisms and then very very gradually forming in to the animal and plants we know of today

  3. the first sexually reproductive organs were simply haploid cells, generated and mixed to form sexuallycreated diploid creatures..

this lead to the first hermaphroditic creatures.. being neither male nor female.. it was then so that creatures that retained one s*x or another had greater sucess and the first true gamete reproduction (as we like to consider it) took place..

they went from simple ovaries, producing millions of eggs at once to more concervative numbers taking  alonger time to ripen and develop..

these eventually lead up to the month os gestation that we human exhibit and the years that animals like whales and elephants show..

basically it was the drive from releasing millions of eggs and hoping a few will survive.. to having but one ofspring that was sure to survive.. that drove u to having more and more complicated reproductive cycles
