  1. Rome was founded on the famous 7 hills around the Tiber Island , a very small island probably 500 m long in the middle of the Tiber river. This was a crucial intersection for transportation and trades as the island was the easiest way to cross the river. By settling there, the Latins were able to apply taxes for those who wanted to go across their land. In addition, settling on seven hills played a major role in Rome's defense against neighboring "tribes", as it allowed the Romans to notice attackers from further distances and give them enough time be prepared for counter-measures as well.
