  1. Actually, the first scribes of both the Mesopotamian, and the Egyptian civilization as well, were those who recorded how much grain was being stored at the local granary (food storage)...

These first granaries, later became the first religious temples, and these first scribes (only about 1% of the population knew how to write), gave rise to the priest class...

  2. The writings of scribes allowed recording of events, new laws and beliefs. As historical records they are invaluable to us in the study of this civilization. To the Mesopotamian people it was a way to pass customs and other things in a way other than verbal stories passed form one person to another.

There is a saying, " If you don't study history, you are doomed to repeat it."

  3. Even before written histories; scribes were used to record inventories.

In fact, most of the writing in cuneiform are inventories of shipments, etc.

They allowed a greater part of the country to use writing, w/o all that mucking about learning to read themselves.

  4. Writings.
