  1. Farming system in which the farmer remains settled in one place. It contrasts with shifting cultivation and nomadic pastoralism.

  2. Sedentary agriculture allowed civilized societies to develop qualities necessary to support an urban style of living. Sedentary agriculture is a method of agriculture in which a society is able to stay in one place and complete its agricultural needs without migrating. Through this new “idea”, societies developed economic specialization, thus, creating a larger urban population. Because of not all of society had to farm for themselves, many citizens went on to become merchants, priests, jobs involving commodity-making, and various other things. This, in turn, led to social stratification, or a class system, in which an elite group of rulers led the society, a trend that still continues today.
