  1. Not 100% on this but I think it was a ship/captain/firstmate of a ship.

  2. Starbuck was the first mate on the Pequod, the ship in Moby d**k by Herman Melville

  3. THey should have called it Bigbucks, cause that is what they charge for a cup of coffee.

  4. Without using Wikipedia (hey girls, nice cut-and-paste) Starbuck was a character in Moby d**k. Starbuck was first mate on the Pequod.

I'm reminded that I haven't read this book since junior high. The fall of 1973, to be exact.

  5. Baldwin, Siegel, and Bowker chose the name Starbucks in honor of Starbuck, the coffee-loving first mate in Herman Melville's Moby d**k(so company legend has it), and because they thought the name evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders. The new company's logo, designed by an artist friend, was a two-tailed mermaid encircled by the store's name.
