  1. I heard he spooked on the way to the ring and galloped off. He slipped and tore some muscles and ligaments in his leg and had a large gash. The vet called it 'catastorphic' but I think they could have saved him. He might have been a pasture horse, but he probally would have recorved fine. it makes no sense to me.

  2. I think I read in a magazine, he was being ridden by the person who rides him besides Karen, not sure of her name, and he spooked and she fell off. Something happened with him and a door (the big sliding doors that close the barn) and he basiclly shattered his leg and ligaments (what the 1st person said was right). They just decided to euthanize him because he would have been in too much pain.

I'm not sure if this is completely correct but it's close I believe...

  3. According to Wikipedia, he sustained an injury at his owner's barn on May 28th, 2008.

He severed the superficial and deep digital flexor tendons, ligaments, cut both branches of the arterial blood supply, and nerves.

The veterinarian said that chances of healing this type of injury are almost zero. As a result, he was euthanized.

edit: Marissa B, if there had been any chance of Teddy being saved, I think that Karen O'Connor would have taken it. Everyone knew that she loved that pony. So, I have to beleive with him cutting two arteries in his leg that there was no way to save him.

  4. What I heard from Becky was that Yes, all of the above, and how he did it was Karen O'Conner was out on a trail ride not far from the stable with another rider and he either got really excited or something and she decided to get off and walk him back. He got loose, and ran back. When they caught up with him at the barn he was deemed too injured to save and was but down on the scene by the on-property vet.

  5. I think he got spooked and and got loose while he was being ridden at his farm and slipped and cut up his leg. i think he slipped and cut himself on the side of the barn. i'm not sure what his exact injuries were. i think he severed a bunch of tendons and ligaments. but they had a vet on scene and there was nothing they could do for him. poor guy. he was so awesome.

  6. he spooked when the groom was in the barn and when they caught him he had a severe laceration on his leg and it tore the arteries and tendons in his leg. Tear

  7. As I understand it, he was being ridden by an assistant of the O'Connors when he spooked, dumped her, and ran back to the barn. On the way back to the barn, he slipped and cut his leg severely. The attached article says he cut it on a sharp rock, but I was told it was a drain pipe. He cut the ligaments, tendons, and the blood supply to his lower right hind leg. The vet on site assessed him and immediately determined that the injuries were catastrophic.  Because the blood supply was gone, there was no way for his leg to heal, even if it could be stabilized. Their choices where to put him down right then or do in in another week after a lot of pain and suffering. It was a really freak accident.

I was supposed to have a riding clinic with Karen O'Connor the next day, but she was so broken up that she decided not to make the trip, and I don't blame her one bit. I certainly would not have felt like going to work the next day. So, David O'Connor made the trip instead and gave us all a great clinic, even though his heart had to be broken, too.

Someone at the clinic said the best epitaph I can image for Teddy. She said, "Teddy was everbody's hero. I always figured that if he could do, that meant that I could do it, too."

    Rest in Peace, Teddy.

  8. i thought karen was riding him, he got really spooky, so she got off to walk him back, he got loose, ran into the barn, and sliced some tendons and major arteries up soooooo they put him down.
