I thought the trade deadline was just that, a deadline. No more trades after that date. How was it the D-Backs could trade 3 minor leaguers for Adam Dunn almost a week after the deadline?

  1. he got though waviers

  2. yeah it was because he was put on waivers and now so is Gary Sheffield but i really think that is stupid cuz if u want to do a trade put the guys on waivers and it defeats the whole purpose of the trade "deadline"

  3. Made an Exceptions through waivers.

  4. Technically, Dunn didn't "make it" through waivers. The Reds probably knew ahead of time that the D-backs were very interested, and they put Dunn on waivers in the hopes that they would claim him.

What happens with the waiver system in MLB is that players can be placed on waivers and teams in order from worst to best record in that respective league (in this case, the NL) have first dibs. The teams that were clearly out of it wanted nothing to do with the upcoming free agent, but since the D-backs are in contention and have a pretty embarrassing record, they had the first chance to claim him, and it sounds like they'll be giving up a hefty amount to acquire him. I dare say it might surpass what the Angels gave up for Teixiera, but we'll see.
