Question:

How did the Australian accent form?

Since we were founed by the British, largely influenced by the Irish and the aboriginals didn't speak english why do we have an accent that doesn't really sound like either?

  1. hah good question.

    I like havin the accent though i reckon its a good one.

    it could be scottish, Irish, english accents all mixed into one and maybe a bit of aboriginal, hah.

    accent come from different cultures  

    after the second world war  lots of yugoslavian , Greeks and italians migrated to australia and only a small % spoke english

  3. Check out your history mate.

    Australia was a prison colony for the English. They transported for life (permanent exile) petty criminals of all types. If you notice the similarity to the Cockney dialect/accent, it is because they came down hardest on people from that section(poor) of London..

I think our isolation from the other countries was a big part of it (once you got here, you stayed a long time.....no backward/forward travel like people do today), so people would lose the influence of the proper accent over time. Also, there was probably an element of deliberate "let's be different", because of the nature of English rule at the time. It is funny now though, as it seems to be getting lost again, due to the large influx of overseas migration, and allowance of only politically correct speech in TV, Movies etc these days!
