How did the Berlin Wall fall?

I've been looking all over the place and i want to know how did the Berlin Wall fall and was it the people's spirit that gave them the drive to overcome their situation. I want to use the fall of the Berlin Wall as an example of how the "spirit of man" can undermine powers over them or societies.

Thanks

  1. The Berlin wall was part of the iron curtain.  It was constructed in 1961, i believe, and dismantled in 1989.  After WWII, Germany was divided into 4 subcategories, each headed by one of the Allied Nations (America, France, Britain, and the Soviets

per the Potsdam agreement.  Because of the Cold war, America, France and Britain's parts joined together to protect West Germany, but thSovietss controlled East Germany. Soviett border guards had shooting orders to kill anyone trying to escape into West Germany, away from the communist society, into capitalistic democratic West Germany.

Despite the west side being the larger side, it was surrounded by communist countries, therefore it was still powerless and isolated.  The wall stood until the late 80's, amid much protesting from the West side (they protested that the wall still stood) and the East Side (people yearning for freedom).  Starting in Sept. /Oct. 1989, the people crossing the border into West Germany grew to the tens of thousands every day, and with protestors on both sides and people even symbolically standing on the wall, they finally decided to take it down. (If I remember correctly, it was because someone in charge at the East border mis read a note detailing who and when was allowed to cross to the West side, he thought it was effective immediately with no papers, so tens of thousands suddenly flooded to border checkpoints and overwhelmed guards (with no orders to use lethal force against it) let them through.  These thousands of easterners were greeted by thousands of Westerners with open arms.  This was November 9, 1989.  After this event, it seemed more and more border checkpoints were opened every week until December 22, 1989. People began taking pieces of the wall with them until there were giant holes, and the guards just  let them.  Then people just "escaped" through the holes.  July 1, 1990, East Germany adopted West German currency.  The military continued dismantling the wall until 1991, with only a few pieces left as a memorial.

  2. The main reason is because the great Ronald Reagan put presure on the evil Soviet Union.Which fell because of his military build up.The Soviets tried to keep up with us by spending on there military. It resulted in them going bankrupt leading to the fall of the wall ,and the Soviet Empire
