  2. Besides the excellent answer that lazy gave you...the British also mapped the country...introduced a system of government...a civil service...a legal system...law and order..etc

    Although colonialism is nowadays a dirty word it was in fact a two way street...and just as the Romans left Britain a rich legacy so the British left India better placed in the world...

  4. you mean besides the trains? the road networks (making trade possible/faster like the trains did, an event that speeds the spread of technology)? the removal of the taggi death cult (ok, that one just left more people alive to work)? the unification the indian people under one language (allowing for easier sharing of ideas among people who would otherwise not have been able to understand each other without first learning several languages)? the installation of a fine military and thus beginning a strong military history (wars cause advances in technology, unfortunate but true)? Really anything that the british learned with technology they took to india because it was such a valuable colony and they wanted to keep profitting from it.
