  1. Like most modern day countries England used to be a group of smaller kingdoms and, as always happens, one kingdom invades another and the result is a larger kingdom for the victor.

Anyway, Athelstan is mentioned as the first king of a united England but he's not exactly well known today, is he?

  2. The kingdom of Wessex is the first kingdom to unite England. EGBERT and his wife Redburga were King and Queen of Wessex from 802. He defeated the rival Mercians at the battle of Ellendun in 825. In 829, the Northumbrians accepted his overlordship and he was proclaimed "Bretwalda" or sole ruler of Britain. He became King  of all of England from 829 to 839.

Queen Elizabeth is 38th in direct line of descent from Egbert.

ALFRED the Great, who was the 4th grandson of EGBERT to become king, was probably the most famous king of this period.

But the monarchy did not have an unbroken line of descent for the first two centuries. Even the Vikings taking over the kingdom of England for periods of time. There were 18 kings during these 239 years. All the kings were related by blood or marriage, but sometimes distantly.

The dynasty is considered as having begun with William the Conquerer in 1066. He crowned himself King and simply told people he had the best claim to the throne. Of course, he was the dominant military power. He did the first census in 1086, but they only counted the heads of households. Population is estimated at 1.25 to 2.0 million.

QE is the 40th monarch since William the Conqueror and only the sixth Queen Regnant. (Mary I, Eliz. I, Mary II, Anne and Victoria preceded her).

The biggest jump was in 1714 when over 50 descendants were skipped over because they were Catholic. By Parliamentary law the monarch must now be a descendant of Sophia of Hanover as long as he or she is not a Catholic or married to a Catholic. Sophia had several thousand descendants so there is no shortage of people.

Since 1714 there have been 11 monarchs over 10 generations. The crown had been passed to a son 5 times, to a grandson 1 time, to a brother 2 times, to a niece 1 time, and to a daughter 1 time. This last group has had six Georges, two Edwards, one William, one Victoria , and Elizabeth.
