Saakashvili, along with several others, led the Rose Revolution in 2003.  As a result, Shevardnadze, who ran Georgia post USSR, stepped down.  Basically, Shevardnadze rigged the 2003 parliamentary elections and everyone knew it, massive protests followed.  New elections came and Saakashvili, the current president won.  He was relected in 2008.
