  1. From Paul Brown the original owner.

  2. They actually got the nickname from the Brown Bomber Joe Louis.

  3. The first guy is right...true...true....

  4. WHO CARES about them?Maybe browns fans.

  5. They are named after their first coach, and part owner, Paul Brown. The majority owner forced him out, and that is when he formed the Bengals, a team his family still owns.

  6. eric is correct.....

  7. O.K. if it is after Paul Brown, what was the franchise called when it was in the All American Football League?   I remember something about the Cleveland Rams but I cannot sort out the history of the franchise(s) over the history of the NFL and the challenger leagues: All American and AFL.

  8. It was named after their first owner Paul Brown and their stadium is also named after him. He also created the Bengals thats why they have the same color as the Browns

  9. A fan contest was conducted to determine the name of the team, with the most popular choice being "Panthers." However, Brown objected to the name after finding out it had been used by a semipro team in the city—one that had a reputation as a chronic loser. This prompted a second contest to choose a name befitting a champion.[3] This contest yielded the nickname "Brown Bombers"—after reigning heavyweight champion Joe Louis—and was shortened to "Browns" for the convenience of headline writers. However, to this day, rumors persist that the team was named after Paul Brown himself

  10. if You saw their starters tonight, that question, has already been answered.

  11. The Wikipedia article is completely wrong. There is no other resource that backs up that stupid story about Joe Louis. The Browns were named out of respect for Paul Brown, the team's first head coach, who led the popular local high school team to several state championships before doing the same for the Ohio State University team.

Brown was an innovator who developed what is known today as the "west coast" offense. Bill Walsh (later a 49ers head coach) was his assistant coach in Cincinnatti, where Walsh studied offensive strategy under Brown. Paul Brown also invented the face mask after his QB, Otto Graham, suffered a vicious wound to his chin in a game. He even tested player intelligence to ensure they were smart enough to grasp the game (this later became a standard across the NFL).

In 17 seasons, Paul Brown led the Browns to 16 winning seasons and 7 championships.

Paul Brown was then and is now an Ohio football legend. This is why the Cleveland Browns are called the Cleveland Browns. This fact is defended on the Pro Football Hall of Fame website:

"The Cleveland All-America Football Conference franchise conducted a fan contest in 1945 to name the team. The most popular submission was 'Browns' in recognition of the team’s first coach and general manager Paul Brown, who was already a popular figure in Ohio sports. Brown at first vetoed the choice and the team selected from the contest entries the name 'Panthers.' However, after an area businessman informed the team that he owned the rights to the name Cleveland Panthers, from an earlier failed football team, Brown rescinded his objection and agreed to the use of his name."

  12. It was when Paul Brown looked in his toliet.
