  1. I don't know if the Beatles made the Sixties, but they were certainly an important part of it.  Their actual period of activity as a group lasted only about ten years, from around 1962 to 1970, but they impressed their generation with a lot of new things.  If you've seen the historical videos of screaming and fainting teenage girls you can get a sense of the mania they inspired.

Their music had a freshness that teens from the Fifties desperately needed.  I was there, but came to their music secondhand.  By college in 1970, when rumors circulated that "Paul is dead" I was finally getting it and approving of it.  The short answer to your question is that the Beatles became a cultural phenomenon that was successful and widely embraced.  They were fresh, they were personable, and they spoke to us.  What more could we ask?

I think the reason they still have weight is because there are so many of us baby boomers in positions of authority and decision making.  But, sad to say, that influence is waning.  I sell secondhand books and can tell you that the Beatles don't sell as they used to do.  With only two out of four left, and they in their sixties, it's no wonder in this youth-focused world.

  2. There is no single answer to that question.

The most pro-social Beatle, John Lennon, spent a lot of time inspiring the counter-culture, anti-war movement.  Sometimes he was successful, sometimes not.  Around 1966, he noted that the Beatles seemed to be more popular than Jesus and that was unfortunate--he was widely quoted out of context as if he were boasting, and was greeted by widespread protests by young Christian sheep who burnt Beatles albums and sang gospel tunes in public.  Six months later they all were replacing their burnt albums and thinking about dropping acid.

McCartney's primary contribution to the worldm outside of some fine music, may have been his wife Linda's vegetarianism.

George Harrison seems to have been the one who was most interested in Indian philosophies and culture, consequently spreading them to the west.

Ringo has been a hedonist.  Which may inspire some.

  3. They didn't "help" the world as such, but their music at the time was new and cutting edge. They led the world in music for years and the songs they wrote made other artists realise they could write their own music (which wasn't so common, up until then) and strive to make better records. Without the Beatles you'd have no Rolling Stones (well, you maybe would but they wouldn't be as good), Beach Boys (Paul McCartney's song writing was so intriguing to Brian Wilson that he had a nervous breakdown trying to come up with an album that was better than Sgt Pepper) and many more besides.

The music is still great to listen to today with young and old people alike discovering it for themselves all the time.
